I want to start 3d design to create animations and possibly video games, what do I need to get started?

I don’t have a big budget, so i’m not going for something mega-expensive. I was wondering if 3ds max, blender, maya and photoshop are the things to go for…

I don’t know how serious you are, but try downloading A.L.I.C.E. (free)

It is easy and gives you a taste of 3d design

Try downloading the Softimage XSI Mod Tool. Its semi-easy to learn, is free, and works great. Try Goggling it. As for Photoshop, Gimp works just as well and its free.

Heres a model I made with XSI:

i started with 3ds max and cross learn it with maya as they have similarities. check out z brush too as its becoming quite popular. after that look at different types of renderers etc.

after that start looking at different gaming engines such as the unreal engine.

the most important thing is to have patience, things take time to render and composite and factor that in with a steep learning curve (modelling in a 3d environment, navigating the interface n stuff, figuring out what filters and properties do what) and keyframing for animations you have to really be dedicated. If u have that than half your problems are gone.

You need a 3d Modeling Program, such as Blender (FREE) or I would recommend 3D Studio if you are able to afford it eventually, but blender reaches everything for me. But you may prefer ZBrush if you like to draw, since you can model/sculpt with a tablet PC. I prefer it way over 3D Studio. On the other hand you aren’t able to animate inside ZBrush and it’s expensive.

Photoshop is a must. You can get by with the free GIMP or even Artweaver (If you like to draw, and have a tablet pc)

There’s a lot, email me at and i will help you out.

    I would highly recommend Blender!
It was used to create the incredibly popular film “Big Buck Bunny”, and it has a built-in game engine! (not even to mention that it’s free)
