I don't know if you understand how to draw freehand and understand perspective. Can you draw 3d using freehand? I think you need to know how to do this before you can even use a software program. Maya is far too advanced a program to use for an individual who isn't in the animation industry. It is used by people in the film and tv industry as well as for video games. You might want to check out Bryce: ? Bryce allows you to create realistic 3d landscapes and animations. You don't have to know how to draw 3d if you use this program.
