Maya or 3DS Max, which way to go?

I hahve intermediate 3D knowledge in Maya and C4D, but I want to commit fully to a 3D app for the next 2 years.

What should I pick and why?

3DSM is more widely used than Maya and most 3D jobs I’ve seen require 3DSM experience.

I’d go for max if you’re wanting to get into the professional field.

I also spent the majority of my time learning C4D before i found out it’s not really used in the professional field so i’ve been learning MAX and Maya, Completely different than C4D though lol, Wish i’d learnt max instead, I prefer using C4D over both Max and Maya though :S

I have friends doing CG animation projects, they prefer 3d studio max.
Maya is easier and more intuitive, but 3DS does have wider flexibility. I have bias because I use to work with Autocad and some of that carries over to 3Ds.

But, really, any artist will find both do very good jobs.

I’ve actually heard the really professional people use Maya. But then again alot of companies also use 3DS Max. So… I’d go with 3DS Max simply because you haven’t tried it yet and it would be good to have knowledge of both programs. You can switch to Maya again later on if you need to.

Here’s the scoop on both as I am instructor for the visual communications department at a local college. 3ds Max is going to be simpler to use, although the interface is similar to Maya as they are created by the same company. However, Max is used for animation mainly in video gaming, but can be used for broadcast and it is used for such. Maya, is used by professional movie studios for more realistic looking CGI effects in movies. So you have to decide the avenue you want to take and base that on which software you want to focus on. However, it would not be difficult to learn both as they are interrelated.

    Good Luck and Have Fun!
