What 3D modeling & animating software is best for Mac osX?

What 3D software is best for a beginner on a mac osX 10.2? Something that has a short learning curve and isn’t overly complex so as to confuse a beginner and also does not cost 8,000 dollars a la Maya. Is Lightwave a good start?

As far as commercial software goes, Cinema 4D is generally regarded as the easiest software to learn. If you’re new to 3D, I would actually suggest you use Blender. It’s a great open-source 3D modelling and animation software which doesn’t cost you a penny.

Maya is the best 3D software you can learn but also the most complex. I started on Maya and 4 years later I feel I have a good grasp of it. You can get the Personal Learning Edition for MAC for free on Autodesks website, it has all the functionality of the full version, just renders with a watermark.

My co-workers at the TV station I work at use Lightwave on their Macs. They seem to like it a lot. I have worked with it a little, it seems to be more “broadcast ready” meaning it’s easier to attain good results with it … but there’s also more of a limitation on the scope of what it can do.

Another question is what you’re wanting to do …

    Games? 3D Studio
    Broadcast and Motion Graphics? Lightwave
High End Film and Motion Graphics? Maya
